Environmental Concerns
Climate change, energy, disposal, water,
food, consumption, land management, ecosystems and science of public health are
all important ecological concerns. However, in my opinion, the most urgent challenge
is the population boom. Population explosion usually occurs because the birth
rate is very high, while the mortality rate decreases drastically. It happens
in developing countries. There are several reasons why the issue is important.
Population is increasing at a rapid
pace, which means that the amount of resources that people require has become
increasingly larger. For instance, energy use is now much more intensive,
especially in regions where natural gas is used to heat residences in winter. Such
consumption is bad for the environment both because of the effect of using fossil fuels and the consequences of
extracting the resource.
Secondly, the increased demand for food
means that commercial farmers will apply all available methods to improve their
yields. That means using pesticides and not wholly safe genetically modified
grains. Such unethical practices will have a detrimental effect on the
environment.
Another concern connected to population
growth is deforestation. People need places to live, so they cut down woods to
clear space for construction. Trees are Earth’s best defense against climate
change, so decreasing their number can lead to an environmental catastrophe.
Moreover, forests are the habitat for
millions of species. Deforestation affects all kinds of animals negatively.
Many types of fauna are now extinct because the places they inhabited were
increased in order to create spaces for humans.
Lastly, people have always been
notorious for producing copious amounts of waste. Large population will mean
increased demand for mass produced goods. Thus, the companies will disregard
pollution and dump toxic materials into the environment in order to increase
rates of production.
